Hillsong believes in the Bible… when it suits them

It takes Brian Houston to try and convince people that Hillsong believes the bible and it takes his wife Bobbie Houston to prove to people that Hillsong don’t believe the bible.

It is a fact that Brian Houston does not embrace the biblical stance on same sex issues. He has deceitfully been grooming his churches to embrace the homosexual agenda. However, since more direct pressure has been put on him to take a side, to save his brand image, Brian has to take what he calls the “conservative” stance. (He cannot afford his Hillsong record label be tarnished thus financially affected by the conservative Christian market.)

Here he is using the bible to justify why homosexuality is wrong (Transcript of Houston at the bottom:

[Click to download video]

There is one major farce Brian Houston pulls in this show. He states,

“As far as I can see in the New Testament in the writings of the apostle Paul, homosexuality is listed as sin. So what I think doesn’t really matter, its what the Bible says that I have to live by.

Fancy that!

Have you ever heard Brian Houston EVER stand on the bible’s authority in his sermons or on other Christian matters in the public domain?

You’re not seeing a man who stands on the Word of God because he is a Christian minister.  Rather, you’re watching a man hide behind the Word of God to give the impression he follows Jesus and His teachings.

If Brian Houston honestly believes what he thinks “doesn’t really matter, its what the Bible says that I have to live by,” then what does he do with the clear “writings of the apostle Paul” on this scripture?

“Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.” 1 Timothy 2:11-15

Here is his wife Pastor Bobbie Houston to prove that Brian is not “conservative” or a follower of Jesus Christ and His teachings:

Brian and Bobbie are still presenting to people what they think people want to hear, capitalising on their audience’s good will and ignorance. And Paul commands to have such frauds silenced and expelled from God’s assembly.

TRANSCRIPT

“Look the thing with gay marriage in Australia – some people won’t like me saying this – but its inevitable. Its going to happen. And Hillsong church and me personally we can live in our society. I mean the most important thing is that we are not forced to do things that would violate our conscience. I am a conservative, I believe that marriage is between a man and a woman, but I also see that everyone deserves to be happy, and so where I sit is, “This is my belief” but if that’s what’s going to happen – I’m O.K. with that. We’ve got many gay people in our church and not only in Australia but around the world.

As far as I can see in the New Testament in the writings of the apostle Paul, homosexuality is listed as sin. So what I think doesn’t really matter, its what the Bible says that I have to live by. So if I was to summarise it, again, I think you’ve got to live and let live. I’m not going to try to tell everyone else how they should live their lives. But where I stand is, yes, gay marriage is, I think, between a man and a woman.

I wouldn’t have any problem if there was some form of union for gay people, you know what I’m saying, and, I’m not trying to tell everyone else how to live their lives. People believe they’re happy that way – I’m OK with it. As long as I’m OK, you’re OK with me holding onto what I believe as well.”

  1. James chapter 1 talks about the double-minded man.

They say one thing, but think something different.

Appears that James had Brian Houston’s type in mind when James wrote that.

  2. get off his back go out and save people and provide food for the needy do something useful and stop being judgemental of a hugely successful man of God

    • “get off his back”
We’ll get off his back until he is silenced and leaves Christianity alone. This is what the bible expects Christians to do with false teachers. (Read Titus.) Do likewise.

    • The Bible INSTRUCTS us to test all things, Adam. It seems this is yet another instruction that Hillsong members wish to ignore. Such an immature, petulant statement doesn’t even merit note but I might just point out to you, Adam, that it is GOD who saves, NOT people, not you, not me and not anyone connected with churchwatch! And God doesn’t care much whether people are “successful” or not incidentally. He cares that we OBEY His word!

    • “stop being judgemental of a hugely successful man of God”

Tell us, in what way do you think that Brian Houston is successful?
      Financially, yes. Biblically, NO WAY.

  3. “So what I THINK doesn’t really matter, its what the Bible says that I HAVE to live by.”!!! This implies Brian Houston does not really believe what God’s word says – but he just has to accept it? And he is “OK” with gays continuing in their lifestyle? Paul was very strong in his condemnation of sexual sin in the Corinthian church. Why won’t Brian give the same warning to them – for their good?

  4. Gay marriage is not covenant marriage so it does not count with me they are just couples living together . If we choose the wrong thing we will reap the fruit of it and to confuse an already confused generation is not good it’s a crooked and perverse generation do we want that for our grandchildren I don’t . Their actions will speak louder then their words in the end . God is the judge it’s the choices that we make will hurt this next generation remember that .

  5. Seriously guys – get a life. Like Paul said – at least Christ is being preached. The judgement here smacks more of the Pharisees Jesus couldn’t tolerate than of the gracious Saviour who offered himself freely to all. Oh and while I’m at it – I don’t recall Jesus 100% offer of his goodness being dependent on obedience. Pretty sure he cared more about faith and mercy. Kindness. What a Saviour!

    • “Seriously guys – get a life. Like Paul said – at least Christ is being preached.”

We receive your rebuke. At least Christ is being preached by these “evil doers” and “dogs”. Well that’s Paul said about those who did that later in his epistle.

“I don’t recall Jesus 100% offer of his goodness being dependent on obedience.”
That’s because you just made up that Jesus so you can slam us with your arrogance. How “kind” of you.

“Pretty sure he cared more about faith and mercy.”
You don’t have faith – you have your idols and cling to them more than to Jesus Christ. If you love Jesus you will keep his word – not defend the words of heretics who blaspheme and disgrace his name.

Christ and His apostles warn us about false prophets and tell us to expel the wicked out of the church. So not only do you have no clue on what your faith is, you lack mercy, truth and anh understanding on the grace of God.

If you knew God’s grace, why do you use it to justify evil in Christ’s name? That goes against the very doctrine of grace taught to us in Romans 6.

  6. Paul, the question is this. Is “Christ crucified” being preached – and repentance and the saving grace of the cross? Or is it a “Christ” preached as if He is some fairy godmother who will bless you if you just give, give, give…… I know which one I heard preached by Brian Houston for years and it was not the former.
Your post is a dead-give-away, with respect, as to the fact that you are not hearing the gospel correctly. You have been indoctrinated into thinking the gospel is about “Kindness”. The Gospel is about REPENTANCE, Paul. Fuzzy wuzzy, feel-good motivational messages preached about blessings and kindness and miracles etc just appeal to the senses as they try to be “relevant”. Repentance is not relevant according to some preachers, but it was very “relevant” to Jesus. ” What a Saviour” indeed! But unfortunately Jesus didn’t tell us that “kindness” would save us, nor faith nor mercy for that matter. REPENTANCE Paul – that is the message of the Gospel, not according to Hillsong but according to the Word of GOD. It is the repentance and the turning away from the old life and towards the Cross from which all these other things then flow naturally.

  7. Paul, let me clear up this issue about about “Christ crucified” being preached at Hillsong.

Referring to Philippians 1:18 “But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice,”

In Paul’s case and text, Christ WAS being preached by those others, though by some with the wrong motives (envy of Paul, etc). Yet they WERE ALL preaching the true Gospel message.

In Brian’s case, Christ is NOT being preached by Brian and Hillsong. Brian preaches a different message about a different ‘Christ’ who wants you to both tithe and get rich (for example).

    • octavius – easy to say. Prove it. You people that do this online are like trolls spruiking all these well formed arguments that sound accurate but where is their basis. Have you been in a Hillsong family (church) for a period of time? Have you walked with the people of the church to test their allegiance and foundation? I think not. I have and I’m not even a ‘Hillsong faithful’ if there is such a thing. I am more in favour of the kingdom of God rather than today’s broken system of churches that reflects the broken state of humanity more than the glory of God. All this negative talk does is go more to prove the desperate nature of the human condition than the glory of God – including yours and mine. As far as prosperity doctrine goes I am against it. But I hear a lot of people make these accusations not just against Hillsong but others also and from what I can tell they’re poorly formed judgements with little evidence to support the case. As is the case with your comment above. An accusation without evidence. You would have to test the hearts and minds of those giving at Hillsong to truly know if you are right. Good luck with that.

    • Paul, I don’t have to. You made the initial comment. You prove Christ is being preached. Because what is being preached is the Money god. Tis that simple Mr Blind, Deaf, and Dumb.

    • Haha. That’s quite a funny response. Thank you for sharing the considerable foundation of your point of view. I can’t seem to see, hear or understand what you mean! Lol

There’s two types of critics in life – good ones and bad ones. Good critics identify something that seems to be contrary to their thinking and determine a well founded opinion based on personal experience and serious investigation. Bad critics rely on whatever information is at hand to form an opinion… Not making an accusation Octavius – just wondering…

  8. One more thing – Jesus preached about money amoung many other things. So if Brian and Bobbie preach about money aren’t they just like Christ as long as their message aligns with his? Also, are you saying they never preach Christ? Never preach Christ crucified? Only preaching money God all the time? Hmmm… All those poor deluded people. How did they ever fool them all? That’s quite an achievement! Up there with what Christ has done leading the world to His light and truth. oh hang on – that’s what they are doing. For Christ and with Christ.

Why not find something more important to invest yourself into…

    • “So if Brian and Bobbie preach about money aren’t they just like Christ as long as their message aligns with his?”

As I said before, burden of proof is on you to prove their message aligns with his. Oh hand on — you can’t.

    • “All those poor deluded people. How did they ever fool them all? That’s quite an achievement!”

Not really a big achievement. Just like you, those people don’t study their Bibles either.

    • “All those poor deluded people. How did they ever fool them all?”
Good question. You’re one of them. Tell us – how did they do it?

Jesus said his disciples will be persecuted for his namesake.

      Hillsong isn’t.

Hillsong is flourishing while Christians are still murdered for believing in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of their sins. Those Christians, according to Hillsong or not flourishing or prospering and represent a false faith contrary to their prosperous, positive faith.

Why not investigate that? Why not investigate why Hillsong hate with a passion, Christians. And when we say “Christians” we talk about those that actualy believe the gospel and the bible at face value and contend earnestly for the faith. Can you explain their vitriolic and slanderous behaviour toward Christians?

    • Lol. You’re hilarious. So question – how do you know I haven’t given my heart to Christ? Also how did God give you the authority to judge? Another one – how do you know I don’t read my bible? In fact how do you know anything about me? Furthermore you don’t know anything about what individuals at Hillsong go through for their faith and the name of Christ because it would seem from your judgement you have never journeyed with them. They’re actually people just like you. And as far as Brian and Bobbies teaching goes I can attest to their love of Christ, His word and their authentic journey with him because I have spent time witnessing that. Something I suggest you examine because you have s baseless foundation. I’d also suggest you examine your God complex. Pride comes before…

    • “how do you know I haven’t given my heart to Christ? Also how did God give you the authority to judge? Another one – how do you know I don’t read my bible? In fact how do you know anything about me?”

We can answer those questions about you by giving you this scripture and then by asking you a question:

“If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or wonder that he tells you comes to pass, and if he says, ‘Let us go after other gods,’ which you have not known, ‘and let us serve them,’ you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams. For the LORD your God is testing you, to know whether you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.” Deuteronomy 13

Is Brian Houston a true or false shepherd/prophet?

Your response will tell us all we need to know about you.

    • Youre hilarious. Pretty sure the one group of people Jesus couldn’t stomach was those used the word for their own benefit and others detriment. People who turned the life giving word into rhetoric and religion. I haven’t heard of your fondness for, or relationship with Christ the whole time you’ve spoken. But then it’s not my job to judge. You very obviously avoided all of my questions last time. Why? As far as testifying goes – I will testify to Christ. As far as Brian and Bobbie go – they testify to Christ. If you have a problem with the wealth of Hillsong, wake up to yourself. Do you think it’s from tithes or from their music which millions of people love? They encourage people to understand the depth of Gods grace and how to live in gratitude of that is the way to walk in life. Tithing is one expression of that gratitude to God. I think you’re missing the point. But how could you know if you were…

    • James 3:1 “Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.”

Romans 16:17-18 “Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which you have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the unsuspecting.”

The above scripture is one seriously ignored these days by so-called pastors, to their peril.

You say ” Pretty sure the one group of people Jesus couldn’t stomach was those used the word for their own benefit and others detriment. People who turned the life giving word into rhetoric and religion.” Can you provide some in context scripture to back that statement up, Paul?

1 Timothy 1:7 “They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm.”

Proverbs 25:14 “Like clouds and wind without rain is one who boasts of gifts never given.”

2 Peter 2:13 “They will be paid back with harm for the harm they have done. Their idea of pleasure is to carouse in broad daylight. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their pleasures while they feast with you.”

2 Peter 2:17-22 “These are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm. For them the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved. For, speaking loud boasts of folly, they entice by sensual passions of the flesh those who are barely escaping from those who live in error. They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved. For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them. What the true proverb says has happened to them: “The dog returns to its own vomit, and the sow, after washing herself, returns to wallow in the mire.”

      Cheers, Team ChurchWatch.

    • Paul asks “So question – how do you know I haven’t given my heart to Christ?” Decisional regeneration isn’t biblical, nowhere in the Bible are “decisions for Christ” mentioned, nor is anyone commanded to “accept Christ” or to “ask Him into your heart.”

John 1:9-13 “The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, NOT OF BLOOD NOR OF A HUMAN DECISION NOR OF THE WILL NOR OF THE WILL OF MAN, BUT OF GOD.”

In saying that, we can point you to this comment which pretty much sums up movements like Hillsong:

“Most of the time we are analyzing the “decisional” converts teach the other “decisional” converts how to be like them. Most of the time we are not even watching and listening to a ‘born from above by God’ person. Since wrestling with the issue of how can these men keep preaching this stuff and when confronted they never change their preaching I realized this simple truth:

Most are tares because the enemy has come and planted them and they keep reproducing the same way, like the weeds they really are.
Some are not, and those, after being told the truth of the Gospel and how the early Called Out Ones preached and taught…will not teach like that anymore.

Depart from those who have been shown the error of this type preaching and let the Holy Spirit do the work of convincing them of Truth.
To those who still attend these types of ‘congregations’ and their ‘services’, depart from error it will only confuse the sheep.

Matthew 13:24-26 “Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field:
But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also.”

      Cheers, Team ChurchWatch

  9. Semantics my friend. We read and know the same bible and follow the same Saviour? And whilst I agree with you on divisional evangelism you draw a long now to try and make the gospel fit your carry on above. What was your crusade again?

    • It’s the concept of (unbiblical) decisional regeneration, not “divisional evangelism” (although it’s a great title for what passes as preaching at Hillsong) – an unintentional error revealing your subconscious feelings perhaps? 🙂

      Cheers, Team ChurchWatch.

    • Paul, is Brian Houston a true or false shepherd/prophet?

    • “We read and know the same bible”

Except YOU obviously don’t know the Bible at all there Paul.

    • You people really are trolls. You know nothing about me but your deductions from a few lines and typos. Is this your ministry to bring people to Christ? To work with the Father and the Son in seeing people saved? I don’t have to quote chapter and verse for the sake of my own self importance. And I don’t have to defend myself to religious fanatics more committed to their doctrine than the giver of faith. You’ve shown your character – that’s enough for me. And if you won’t answer my questions neither will I answer yours (again – you can insert the chapter and verse to nurse your holier than thou egos). Paul out… 🙂

    • “I don’t have to quote chapter and verse for the sake of my own self importance.”

Did we ask you to “quote chapter and verse for the sake of [your] own self importance”?

      Grow up.

“I don’t have to defend myself to religious fanatics more committed to their doctrine than the giver of faith.”

Paul – the difference between Christians and yourself is this:
Christians are accountable to God’s Word. Why are you so hesitant to stand on the Word of God for your defense?

    • “You people really are trolls.”
Who is the one who came onto this website to argue? I guess you’re the troll Paul.

“You know nothing about me but your deductions from a few lines and typos.”
That foolishness is coming from someone who has not stopped making judgements since the moment they arrived.

“Is this your ministry to bring people to Christ?”
Uh, show us what you’re doing. You don’t know the Bible at all, so we know you aren’t out witnessing.
Furthermore the people running this website probably do more for Christ in an hour apparently than you have ever done since you can’t even defend anything you say or do with Scripture. All you’ve done is make a total fool of yourself.

“I don’t have to quote chapter and verse for the sake of my own self importance.”
That’s a good thing, because you aren’t able to anyway.
Though what’s baffling is, why are you asking others to prove things when you aren’t willing (nor able) to yourself?

“And I don’t have to defend myself to religious fanatics more committed to their doctrine”
So you don’t think doctrine’s important huh? Well it shows, since you don’t know any. All you know is to quote Mr Confused himself Billy Graham ‘giving your heart to Christ.’ How touching, saying unscriptural things to prove how spiritual you are by quoting a heretic who has said there are multiple ways to God.

“You’ve shown your character – that’s enough for me.”
Yes, the people running this website have shown you their good character, a lot of patience towards your nonsense, and their faithfulness to maintain the integrity to the Word of God, which you apparently don’t believe in. Experience, that is false experiences, are what you put your faith in, you’re such a smart fella lol.

“you can insert the chapter and verse to nurse your holier than thou egos”
Paul you’re the one who came here to show off what you know, which turned out to be nothing (no big surprise). And that’s how you deal with your own shortcomings, playing the way-too-immature “holler than thou” card, because you have nothing left to say and nowhere else to go. As of yet you still can’t cough up any Scriptures to support your fallacies, yet you still can’t admit you’re wrong. You really do need to grow up.

    • For those who flippantly couldn’t care less about doctrine… A verse written by the wise Paul to benefit the foolish Paul…

1 TIMOTHY 4:16 “Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.”

  10. Regarding TITHING … can anyone find support for tithing, compulsory or voluntarily, in the teaching letters of the New Testament? Tithing in the Old Testament was originally to provide support for the Levites, who were not given an allocation of land in ‘the promised land’. And not everyone had to tithe – only land owners, because they had crops and animals from which to tithe- farm labourers could/did not tithe — and it actually came to a lot more that just 10%. Did Jesus, Joseph or the apostles tithe? When Paul wrote about collecting offerings to help the Christians in Jerusalem (1 Corinthians 16:1-4) he did not mention tithing. We are to contribute free-willingly, and as God has enabled us, without denying our family needs. The false teaching on tithing has caused many sincere Christians stress because of the pressure. Example; teaching struggling folk that their poverty is due to not tithing! Sadly, many churches would suffer financially if they stopped pushing tithing as an obligation (eg; some of the mega-churches and televangelists). Have they mortgaged themselves into reliance upon tithing? And as for the ubiquitous “tithe and you’ll be blessed” and “you will receive 100-fold” mantras, enough said. For some televangelists, it’s actually, “you tithe and I’ll be blessed”. AND, 10% of a $100 000 salary is a lot less difficult than 10% of a pension, or less for a homeless person.

  11. Wow Paul! I know EXACTLY how that feels when people won’t answer your questions. I have been waiting for YEARS for Houston to answer mine! It’s frustrating isn’t it.
