Brian Houston recently made the claim that, “Jesus became you, so that you could become Him.” You can watch the footage below and read the transcript. Watch the clip in context and if you agree or disagree with us quoting him, ask yourself this question – why does he think this and why did he even say it?

What other biblically qualified teacher would say this?

The reality is that we have been waiting for Brian Houston to say something like this for a long time. Why? He is an Apostle of the New Apostolic Reformation that holds to the belief that we are little gods, being able to speak things into existence like God Himself. This doctrine is known around the NAR as ‘Sonship’ or ‘Spirit of Adoption/Sonship’ (SAS). However, many also call this ‘Word of Faith’.

As we hear in other New Apostolic Reformation churches, Brian Houston has finally come out with a similar mantra. For instance Bill Johnson will make the claim “As He is, so are we.” Brian’s reaction is the same as Kris Vallotton who boldly told Bethel that “Yea is big ‘G’ and you are little ‘g’, you’re a little ‘g’ god” and quickly cleaned up his statement by stating, “I understand we’re not Mormons.”

Not only is Brian Houston a ministry friend with Bethel (who believe they are little gods), he is also a ministry friend with Joseph Prince – who uses the twisted scripture ‘as He is, so are we’ to teach how people need to perceive Christ and themselves to be healed. But it was more than these associations indicating Brian believed this – Hillsong’s history goes straight back to the origins of this ‘little god’ doctrine: the New Order of the Latter Rain (NOLR).

The NOLR taught that individuals could be gods (Manifest Sons of God – MSG) and that the church corporately can become fully God manifest (Man-Child Company – MCC) because of the spiritual baptism they received in their revival in 1948. The MSG today is called the ‘New Breed’ and the MCC is called the ‘One New Man’ (ONM). Brian Houston’s father Frank Houston, was influenced by and believed the false gospel of the NOLR which is the same gospel Brian Houston believes, a false gospel which leads them down the road to ‘deity’. This can be seen when we look at Bill Johnson who encouraged his members to:

“..go home and read Revelation 1 and look at that and go, “I’m like that? Glorified at the right hand of the father?” This is your impact, now, in the world.” [Source]

Likewise, Brian Houston in the past took a messianic Psalm and encouraged people to “take the psalm on to yourself” – to see themselves seated at the right hand of God. Chris Rosebrough exposed the dangers Brian Houston of applying ‘deity’ to oneself. It was only a matter of time for Brian Houston to state what he actually believes below.

What is peculiar with this is that just like the ‘Allah’ comment a few years ago, this is a classic form of ‘gaslighting’ where he relies on people to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Although he says, “I’m not saying you’re Jesus and we should all pray to you” Brian later says, “He took on your fallibility, your weakness, your vulnerability on the cross, so that you could become Him.” In other words, Mr Houston is still essentially saying “Christ became you so you could become him.”

“It was weakness that caused the fall. But Jesus turned it all around. You see on the cross, Jesus became you, so that you could become Him. And what do I mean by that? I’m not saying you’re Jesus and we should all pray to you… What I am saying is that on the cross Jesus took on your weakness, your sin, your sickness, infirmity and so on. And in the resurrection, He filled you with the POWER of the resurrection. That’s what I mean when I say ‘He became you’. He took on your fallibility, your weakness, your vulnerability on the cross, so that you could become Him. Have his power as your strength in life. That’s why Paul was able to say, ‘when I am weak, I am strong’.”
