The Driscoll/Lindell ‘dogfight’ at James River Church.

“Look out for the dogs, look out for the evildoers, look out for those who mutilate the flesh. For we are the circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh…” Philippians 3:2-3

“That’s what’s so ironic, if you want to show all of your conference attendees what Biblical manhood looks like, Martin Driscoll would be the last example of that.”

Mere detail: the backdrop of the pre-conference act that Driscoll called a ‘striptease’.

Unpacking the “dog eat dog” fiasco at Stronger Men’s Conference.

This is one article CWC is hesitant to cover given that Mark Driscoll and John Lindell are nothing more than grifters, capitalising on the fads in the Evangelical Industrial complex and ‘making merchandise’ of gullible men.

Such people are described in the bible as false teachers, articulated by the Apostle Peter as “unreasoning animals.”

“But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction, And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

[…] Bold and willful, they do not tremble as they blaspheme the glorious ones, whereas angels, though greater in might and power, do not pronounce a blasphemous judgment against them before the Lord. But these, like irrational animals, creatures of instinct, born to be caught and destroyed, blaspheming about matters of which they are ignorant, will also be destroyed in their destruction, suffering wrong as the wage for their wrongdoing. They count it pleasure to revel in the daytime. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their deceptions, while they feast with you. They have eyes full of adultery, insatiable for sin. They entice unsteady souls. They have hearts trained in greed. Accursed children!” 2Peter 2:1-3, 10b-14

This past weekend, attendees of the Stronger Men’s Conference, overseen by Pastor John Lindell of James River Church (JRC) in Springfield, Missouri, once again providing controversial evangelical ‘entertainment’.

The James River Cult leaders: John and Debbie Lindell

James River Church (“Goat farm”) leaders: John and Debbie Lindell

The testosterone-driven conference, (known for their blend of Christianity with displays of ‘over the top’ masculinity such as bull riding, evil Knievel stunts, monster trucks and boxing), have consistently pushed boundaries. Unfortunately Magala’s presence marks a new low, prompting scrutiny of Pastor Lindell’s judgment and the lengths to which he is willing to go to draw a crowd.

Among the lineup of pre-service entertainment, (which notably included a demonstration of monster trucks), was Alex Magala’s sword-swallowing act.

The blind rebuking the blind.

The following day, controversy erupted as Mark Driscoll (previously embroiled in scandals himself), denounced Magala’s performance.

“I’ve been up since one in the morning. The reason I’m hoarse is I’ve been praying for you, and my heart is very burdened for you. I want to be very careful with this, and it’s not what I want to say, but the Jezebel spirit has already been here. The Jezebel spirit opened our event. This is a rebuke and a correction of no one; this is an observation

Before the word of God was open, there was a platform. It was a high place. On it was a pole, an Asherah, the same thing that’s used in a strip club for women who have the Jezebel spirit to seduce men.

In front of that was a man, who ripped his shirt off like a woman does in front of a pole at a strip club. That man then ascended.

See, our God is not arrogant. He doesn’t ascend. Our God is humble. He descends. Then he swallowed a sword and Jesus cried.”

Pastor Lindell promptly intervened, “Matthew 18ed” Driscoll from the stage and lectured the helpless alpha males.

“Let me just say this: If Mark wanted to say that, he should have said it to me first. He didn’t. Matthew 18. Matthew 18: If your brother offends you go to him privately.

I talked to Mark for a half-hour. There was not one word of that! He’s out of line. If he wanted to say it, he could say it to me. You may not agree with me. You may not agree with him. But we are brothers in Christ, and there’s a right way to handle disagreement.

And I’m just telling you, I’m not going to sit back and watch someone do publicly what they should have done privately,” Lindell continued. “As a pastor and a man of God, I’ll call another man of God out. I love Mark, but he was out of line. I have a responsibility spiritually for this event. We saw 530 people come to Christ. We’re going to conduct ourselves in a Christian manner and we’re going to go according to the Bible, and the Bible tells us how that should have been resolved, and it wasn’t.”

Dr Brown decides to weigh in.

It is worth pointing out how even Dr. Michael Brown completely missed the mark on the situation as he weighed in on this fiasco.

“What New Apostolic Reformation?”

Dr. Brown informed his audience that he,

… received a phone call from one of my ministry school grads, now a trusted colleague. “Dr. Brown,” he said, “I go to this church. I know this pastor. He’s a fine man and he preaches holiness and purity. I’m perturbed.”

My colleague also told me that particular pastor, John Lindell of James River Church in Missouri, was involved in restoring Driscoll to ministry after a previous ministerial failure. After booting Driscoll from the stage, Lindell personally took to the stage and told the crowd they had talked for 30 minutes before Driscoll got up to speak — yet not a word was said about the performance in question.

Why didn’t Driscoll broach the subject then?

I don’t know the answer to that particular question, but I do have some thoughts on this event.

Source: Michael Brown, The Church That Hired a Former Male Stripper to Perform at a Men’s Conference, The Stream, https://stream.org/the-church-that-hired-a-former-male-stripper-to-perform-at-a-mens-conference/, Published April 16, 2024. (Accessed April 16, 2024.) [Archived]

So this ‘trusted colleague’ of Dr. Brown says Lindell is ‘a fine man and he preaches holiness and purity’. No, he doesn’t. Read further below to understand Lindell’s theological and methodological approaches to his movement.

Why is Dr. Brown even weighing in when he himself often shows no evidence of the Holy Spirit in the realm of discernment? Dr. Brown makes this claim (emphasis added):

3) The proper protocol would have been for Driscoll to speak to the pastor privately, urging him to immediately correct the situation with repentance and an apology. If Lindell refused, then the right thing would have been for Driscoll to tell him he could not participate in the conference and then issue a public statement as to why.

So, technically, Driscoll did not follow proper order — but no one really has a right to complain about this in light of the greater offense that had taken place, namely, the carnal performance.

Proper protocol? Proper order?

If Dr. Brown ever bothered to research these men (even though he often broadcasts he never does – because he doesn’t have time), he would very quickly learn that both Driscoll and Lindell are unqualified to even properly correct each other. And because of their carnally-driven and spiritually bankrupt ministries, the ‘alpha-males’ at this conference are just as much in the dark taking pointless sides.

So what does Dr. Brown do? The usual.

He promotes himself and appeals to his own subjective standards of spiritual holiness.

So nothing Dr Brown offered was helpful in this case. He had an issue with this sword-swallowing performance but not with the pre-service entertainment that “featured a monster truck demonstration”, to which he had no objection. Is Dr. Brown demonstrating he is as ‘carnal’ as Driscoll and Lindell?

Leonard Ravenhill and David Wilkerson would be turning in the grave
watching Dr Brown behaving like this.

Reconciliation proves Driscoll was standing for nothing?

Later, both Driscoll and Lindell ‘made up’ for their unruly behaviour.

[Click to Download]

Reconciliation… over.

Behind the scene, exchanges occurred between Driscoll and the Lindell family. John Lindell finally had enough and called out Driscoll’s atrocious behaviour at an evening conference session on April 17, 2024, concluding men at his conference should treat Mark Driscoll as a ‘pagan’ or ‘tax collector’ as mentioned in Matthew 18.

“To this point, Mark has done nothing to calm down the vigilante acts of his followers… And if he refuses to listen, even to the church, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector. That means if he doesn’t listen to the rebuke of tonight, any believers should not have anything to do with Mark Driscoll… In the presence of God and of Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, Mark we call on you to publicly repent.

We are calling you to publicly repent for refusing to stop the spread of lies regarding Alex Magala, a Christian brother. Mark, we are calling you to publicly repent for sowing disunity in the body of Christ. Mark, we are calling you to publicly repent for covertly trying to divide brothers and making false and slanderous accusations against Brandon Lindell. Mark, we are calling you to publicly repent for trying to create division in the Lindell family, all the while saying you love us. Mark, we are calling you to publicly repent for trying to destroy James River Church through attacking its leadership.

To those who follow Mark Driscoll Ministries, in light of what has been presented, you should reconsider your relationship and support of Mark Driscoll Ministries.”

Nevertheless, this is the pot calling the kettle black. Both need to step down from the pulpit and find employment outside the church.

The performance in question.

The actual performance by Alex Magala at James Riverside Church was both professional and tame in comparison to the other entertainment gimmicks at the Stronger Men’s Conference. At least this performance embodies the idea of a strong man confront real death-like situations which is intended to shock audiences.

And the performance is not sexual.

If people didn’t even know the backstory of Magala, his ‘death-defying’ performances were promoted on ‘Britain’s Got Talent’.

Warning: some may find this type of entertainment inappropriate to watch.

He was not presented as a stripper.

This was not a striptease.

Magala would have been to paid work as a professional performer. Nothing sexual or ‘Jezebel related’ at all. Just ‘dangerously’ falling to the ground with a sword touching his gut and ‘defying death’. It suited James River Church to include his performance as it goes with the brand of Lindell’s ‘Stronger Men’s Conference’. Mark Driscoll’s response raises more questions than answers.

Sexualised men?

Leafiore Tracy of ‘Take Me To Eternity’, shared with us her thoughts on the pre-conference sword-swallowing performance:

“I find it funny cause I am a girl and have seen quite a few sword swallowing routines and never thought anything of the guy being shirtless. I mean boxing matches, wrestling, MMA – none of those are sexualised.

It’s just absurd. Maybe [Driscoll] was convicted because he was turned on by it?”

It’s a valid question given Mark Driscoll’s past sexually explicit sermons and ‘God-given’ pornographic visions.

If Dr. Michael Brown, Mark Driscoll, or men at the event think this pre-entertainment show was ‘sexual’ in orientation, how are we meant to interpret their response?

Justin Peters addresses this issue in a video towards the end of this article,

The performer and performance in question.

Unfortunately, Mark Driscoll decided to smear this 21 year old’s career and livelihood, with slanderous claims made against the young man. Let’s let Alex Magala speak for himself, where he posted the following about his life, story and artistic backgrounds (click posts to read or watch them – all content has been downloaded in case they are removed).

After my performance at James River Church conference a 53 year old Pastor was judging a 21 year old me. Well, to put it in a perspective I wanted to offer Pastor @markdriscoll to move into a country on another side of the planet, like China, or Russia that he never been before, that he has almost Zero knowledge of the language, Zero friends, Zero family, and $60 in his pocket. And see how he is gonna make it. And believe me I tried. I couldn’t find any job. So I spent $35 (out of $60) on the sword and was performing on streets Hollywood blvd. The rest of money I spent on milk and oatmeal. In my first performance I got a tip of $4.50. And I would’ve continued, but the injuries from Sword Swallowing wouldn’t allow me to perform often…

I just ran out of oatmeal…

Also I wanted to add.

Everyone finds God in his own time.

Take the family to a circus and enjoy the Sword Master Magala’s act. Or let Lindell and the James River Church put on a community carnival/funday and pay local artists to value their contribution to their communities.

However this was not an acceptable event for a Christian conference in a church. The ‘Christian’ backlash against this young entertainer who is juggling faith and his hard life in the entertainment industry should not have been made more difficult than it already is.

What is the real issue?

As it is written:
“God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”

Romans 2:24

The bigger issue is not Alex Magala’s controversial performance – the bigger issue is James River Church, what it stands for and what it offers.

Driscoll does not appear to have any problem with the ministry of Lindell at all – just the ‘Jezebel’ entertainment. Furthermore, as other Christian voices have pointed out, Mark Driscoll made no coherent or biblical sense as to why the performance was wrong.

So what was wrong? Let’s look at the bigger picture.

An atheist website nails the many issues surrounding the behaviours of these unqualified men. The below quote is in the context of them having a concern with Lindell’s rebuke of Driscoll:

“That right there is the epitome of a Christian men’s conference: One @$$#0!3 delivering a diatribe against a performance he doesn’t understand but insists he’s an expert about. Another @$$#0!3 shouting at him from off-stage before claiming the real concern is that disagreements ought to be raised in private while never apologizing for inviting @$$#0!3 1 to the event in the first place.

That’s the love of Christ in action.

(For what it’s worth, the idea that all disputes ought to be handled in private is horrible advice. That makes it far too easy for real problems—not what Driscoll was referring to, but actual problems—to be swept under the rug. It’s only because pastors went public about Driscoll’s abusive behavior that he ever saw any kind of punishment. That’s also true of sexual abuse within churches.)

In any case, the two men reportedly returned to the stage together to discuss their disagreement, but video of that is not available as far as I can tell.

Driscoll has plenty of supporters online following this incident, including the person who shared those videos online, who believes the performer’s history as an actual stripper is relevant to his performance. I don’t buy that at all. Magala wasn’t doing anything sexual; he did the kind of routine he’s performed on shows like “America’s Got Talent.”

Here’s the simplest solution to all of this: Avoid any church that hosts a men’s event. They’re always this over-the-top idiotic. This very church hosted one a couple of years ago that involved destroyed cars, a tank, fire, and insurrectionist senator Josh Hawley. If you need any of that to get closer to Jesus, you’re better off walking away from religion entirely.”

Why are so many Christian men both in the world and what they think is ‘church’? Are they completely in the dark in their understanding of the things of God and things in this world? And what does the world do? Laugh at them and blaspheme God all the more.

Who is John Lindell?

John Lindell is the ‘pastor’ of James River Church. Their website states,

John Lindell, pastor, speaker, and author of Soul Set Free, and New Normal, is known for his powerful and dynamic verse-by-verse teaching of God’s Word. For over thirty-one years, John and his wife, Debbie, have served together as the Lead Pastors of James River Church, a faith-filled, multisite church with six campuses reaching the world with the gospel. John and Debbie have two married sons, David and Brandon; a daughter, Savannah; and eight grandchildren.

John Lindell was also recently under fire for the controversial “Three toe miracle” which took the internet by storm in Christian communities around the world. The “Show Me the Toes[archived] campaign is still present, ensuring that John Lindell, Krissy Thompson and Bill Johnson remain embroiled in this controversy.

Holly Pivec writes,

The leaders of James River Church near Springfield, Missouri—an Assemblies of God church—claim that hundreds of miraculous healings occurred during the recent “Week of Power” conference hosted by the church on March 12-March 16. But the most stunning miracle claim of all was made by a woman named Kristina Dines who had three toes amputated some years ago.

Dines claimed that after the “apostle” Bill Johnson asked if anyone needed a “creative miracle”—and after some other conference attendees prayed for her toes—she watched in shock as three missing toes grew back on her foot in a span of 30 minutes. Following her stunning miracle claim, it was repeated publicly by the lead pastor of James River Church, John Lindell, as well as Johnson. It was also reported by national media—including USA Today, Daily Mail, and Newsweek—after a local Christian, who desired to see proof of the regrown toes, created a website named ShowMetheToes.com, urging people with evidence to send emails. To date, no photographic or video evidence has been offered.

Is James River Church a cult?

James River Church is a hybrid of the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) and Purpose Driven Life (PDL) cults. This explains their emphasis on Bethel-like supernatural manifestations; bible college student ‘slave labour’ for their events; and their high seeker-sensitive entertainment emphasis in ministry. Their emphasis on money also suggests that they are also tainted by Health and Wealth (HAW) theology.

Their boisterous men’s conferences reflect the cult-like Manly-Man Resurgences (MMR) [Link] theology and methodological approach to ministry. And their ‘testosterone-driven’ conferences are proof of their christology and pneumatology.

As a normal feature of modern-day cults, current members at James River Church seem to be unaware of the damage they are doing to their communities, other churches and the witness of Christ in their region.

This comment below by Parahelion captures the ignorance of its own members using similar arguments we often hear cults use – eg. they will claim that people who ridicule James River Church have never actually attended or even go to church. ‘You’re just uninformed, attack Christianity in general’.

They post,

“As a Christian, Pastors Son, and an actual 6 year attendee of James River Church. I’m going to give you a non usual reddit response. It seems people are afraid of James Rivers Success and wishes it was smaller which doesn’t make any sense because its all about growth, we can’t just sit around and be comfortable. Secondly, I genuinely believe that John Lindell really cares about everyone who attends and I wouldn’t doubt that he prays for us every single day. People call us hypocrits but act like they can redicule (sic) James River but never actually attend or go to church in general. Same people that call God “sky daddy” and John Lindell “wizard”. I cannot take anyone who called James River a place of hypocrits and charlotans (sic) who has never even touched the property in the first place seriously. Its like they are afraid of being wrong or something. Only using a biased outside perspective of what’s happening at James River. I’m very curious how you guys came up with the point of view you have now (unless you bash christianity in general and have never touched a church building in your life.) Lastly, i’ve seen people ridicule the fact that James River has a coffee shop. Well its because there is a elementary and college building connected to James River. Also its about having a community.”

Here are some other testimonies of James River Church.

shares their experience (4:50:54):

So I went to their college for several months, and was duty bound to go to church every single service. They used the college kids as unpaid labor to set up their enormous conferences and I was so burnt out there. With that being said, I saw first hand what they called “miracles”. I thought I experienced one too. They make you feel very emotional and then pray over you and convince you you’re healed. For me, it was my chronic anxiety disorders that I thought were healed. They were not. Not even close. I attempted suicide while attending their college because they made me feel awful for not giving my life and time and energy completely to their church. They looked down on other denominations. They look up to John Lindell as though he is their messiah. I was once told that if I disagreed with John Lindell I disagreed with god. They called me disgusting for speaking out against pastor Debbie’s anti trans sermons that she gave to the youth, and I was kicked out for it. Their miracles don’t actually happen, they convince you they do. Maybe they convince themselves too. All I know is I was brainwashed and I’m so glad I’m out of that toxic environment

shares their experience (3:51:00),

I got sucked in by a friend because I was new to the area and making friends was hard. The first thing they asked me was “where’s your husband?” And I told them he’s atheist. The go “do you work?” And I told them no and they said “sorry this probably isn’t the place for you, without tithing how can you expect to be saved?” Then the whole “yoga is demonic but for a fee you can do my Christian yoga which is the same poses but different names.” They’re a giant MLM and it’s disgusting the way they prey on people. A friend of mine used to go there but stopped once her mother was given “help” by the church, only AFTER they signed a contract to tithe for so many years and pay them back.

 shares their experience (1:48:43):

I recently started attending their West campus cause I wanted to experience a mega church and at first it was fun. Music was loud and the people were great. Very casual style.

Then I noticed they kept asking for money… ok I got it, a church relies on it’s members to give to sustain, but it slowly came to me that they operated like a corporation. They have franchise opportunities. Then everywhere I looked I noticed they kept blasting you with qr codes to give money and it got ridiculous.

Next, was how the pastor opens up the service. It’s always testimonies on new people who got job promotions after attending. Then the medical miracles. But the miracle testimonies kept getting more and more outrageous. (Raising people from the dead, shorter legs growing longer, internal pains suddenly going away)… then the 3 toes.

That was my last straw and I’m not going back. The fact that this is getting so much attention and no one from the church is coning out to say anything about it.

My thought is they are preying on the delusional. Church is fine to congregate and deliver a message, but once you start to blatantly lie to your congregation then it becomes problematic. They are giving these exaggerated testimonies and I feel for the people who stay because they think these miracles can happen to them… but they never will.

After allowing a stripper on stage, megachurch Pastor John Lindell claims you can’t criticize him, otherwise you’ll be headed towards unbelief and live a barren life. In this conversation with Mark Driscoll, after kicking him off stage, there was not ONE MENTION of the former male stripper that they had performing at the Stronger Men’s Conference. I’ll post the whole 30 minute video in the comments.

Pastor John Lindell DOUBLES DOWN on having former male stripper at men’s conference, calls on @PastorMark to repent, says believers “should not have anything to do with MARK DRISCOLL” if he does not.

Lindell is COMPLETELY, and repeatedly misusing Matthew 18, seemingly as a means to distract from himself and shift the blame to Mark.

He believes the performance was not sexual in nature, though the performer’s pinned Instagram post (Which features a woman dancing around him in lingerie) says completely otherwise. Is this really the hill you want to die on, Lindell?
